Center for Human Rights to remain open at University of Iowa

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa no longer plans to close a center concerned with the study of human rights issues.

Provost P. Barry Butler says under a restructuring move, the center will move from the international programs division in his office to the law school on July 1.

Supporters of the Center for Human Rights protested the plan to close the center for months.

An advisory board will be created to coordinate the center's activities across the university.  The new director will be Adrien Wing, a law professor.

Butler believes the restructuring should ensure a strong future for the center, which opened in 1999.
