As the younger brother of former conference Player of the Year Adam Koch, Jake Koch had some heavy expectations heaped on his shoulders when he came to UNI. But quickly, Jake learned to find his own identity.
"Pretty soon after my Sophomore year, I just stopped caring. I mean, Adam's a great player, but we have different styles of game," Jake said.
UNI Assistant basketball coach Erik Crawford adds, "They're a little bit different players, but I think Jake's done a really good job of living up to his own expectations and not necessarily trying to put himself in the same category as Adam as a player. They're just different types of players."
After that, Jake quickly figured out what type of player he wished to be.
"I try to do a little bit of everything, not just be great at one thing, but be good at a lot of things; do whatever the team needs, really," Koch said.
As Jake has developed at UNI, he's had more than enough support from his parents, who make the five hour drive from Wisconsin for every home game.
And Jake says the support is appreciated.
"It's awesome, our family is so close, and to have one of them at every single home game my entire career is just unbelievable; that's something special to have them there, and it keeps you motivated to play."
The family tradition is far from over for the Kochs, as youngest brother Bennett will be joining the Panthers next season.
"He'll be taken care of, but I'll be around this summer to help him work out, and I have confidence in the coaching staff to get his career started off the right way," Jake said.
Sounds like four more years of road trips for the Koch parents.
