Dubuque thrift shop expands for good

an expansion celebration is underway for a well known Dubuque thrift shop which annually donates more than $200,000 to fight cancer.

The Discovery Shop in Dubuque donates 100 percent of its profits to the American Cancer Society. It's an upscale resale store selling gently-used donated items.

When the neighboring Sara Lee Bakery Outlet store closed its doors late last year, the Discovery Shop bought the space and expanded.

"It's not a consignment shop," manager and volunteer coordinator Jane Ulstad said. "100 percent of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society and we are staffed by about 125 volunteers besides myself."

She said many volunteers, which come from all over the tri-state area, have been giving their time to the Discovery Shop since its opening nearly 20 years ago.

"They've been here the whole time because they know it's a good cause and they also enjoy working with the people that volunteer here and the customers," Ulstad said.

In 2012, the shop made more than $219,000 for the American Cancer Society, which owns this and other Discovery Shops nationwide.

To celebrate its expansion, the Discovery Shop is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. Following that is a three-day open house.

The Discovery Shop in Dubuque is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed on Sundays. Volunteers will accept donations of gently used women's, men's and children's clothing and knick-knacks during open hours.

The Discovery Shop is located at 2197 University Avenue in Dubuque. Its Facebook page is HERE.
