Former Columbus Coach Kupferschmid dies

Former West Central and Waterloo Columbus girls basketball coaching great Mel Kupferschmid has died from complications of Alzheimer and lung cancer. He was 84. 

In a 28-year coaching career, Kupferschmid's teams won 551 games and lost 125 games and played in 13 state tournaments.

Kupferschmid's teams won three state titles and he was the first coach in Iowa to win state tournaments in both six player with West Central in the late fifties and five player basketball with Columbus in 1990 which finished a perfect 25 and oh. Kupferschmid also led West Central to a state softball championship in 1958.

Kupferschmid is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace, their four children and three grandchildren.
