Iowa Children's Museum holds Engineering Day

Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville was full of youngsters Saturday, not for shopping but for learning.

Saturday was Engineering Day at the Iowa Children's Museum and kids were everywhere building gum drop models and paper airplanes.

This is the tenth year for the event, sponsored by Rockwell Collins, to promote the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

It is part of National Engineers Week, to celebrate the positive contributions engineers have in society.

"What were trying to teach young people is that engineering is about exploring a passion and finding a way to build a strong base with math and science," said Jenny Becker, Manager/Community Relations for Rockwell Collins.

The Iowa Children's Museum is on Governor Branstad's S.T.E.M. Advisory Council to help increase education for kids in the S.T.E.M fields.

Approximately 1,500 people attended Engineering Day Saturday.
