WATERLOO (KWWL) -

While this is often thought of as tax time, it's also an important time for filling out financial aid applications for college in the fall.

Matt Sprengeler is a financial aid advisor at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo. He's no stranger to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA.

"The most important thing to know about FAFSA is don't be scared of it," said Sprengeler.

Sprengeler said while can look intimidating, this is the perfect time of year to fill out your FAFSA.

"This is when you need to do it because now is when we're working on financial aid for the fall because it takes a lot of work. So we recommend students as soon as their taxes are done as soon as their families taxes are done, go ahead and fill out FAFSA," said Matt Sprengeler.

If you need help with the FAFSA, Hawkeye Community College is hosting two financial aid events. The first one is Saturday, February 16 as part of "Experience Hawkeye Day."

It runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Hawkeye Campus in Waterloo.

You can also get help on Tuesday, February 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. That event is part of a national effort to offer financial aid assistance to parents and students.

Sprengeler said everyone going to college in the fall should fill out the free application to find out what kind of financial help you can get for education.

"It gathers a bunch of data that will tell us what kind of assistance we can provide, what kind of loans we can make available, if there are federal grants we can give you," he said.

While you typically have until July 1 to fill out the FAFSA, Sprengeler said the sooner, the better.

You can fill out the paper version or go online by clicking here.

Sprengeler said the online version even offers help and hints to make it even easier to fill out.

If you do need help, the Financial Aid Office at Hawkeye Community College is available to answer questions.
