Decorah invites public to forum on frac sand

A planning committee in Winneshiek County will hold an informational meeting about frac sand on Wednesday, February 20.

Lyle Otte of Decorah will be the moderator at the public meeting which will be held at Decorah High School from 7:30-8:30 PM.

"We have the same sand formations in sections of Winneshiek County, and we're trying to get ahead of what's happened in Allamakee County," said Otte.

For months, Allamakee County residents have weighed in on concerns about frac sand mining, particularly near New Albin.

According to Otte, 130 letters have been mailed to county and city officials, inviting them to attend Wednesday's meeting.

Otte said the meeting will inform citizens of the geology in Winneshiek County, and about the dangers of frac sand mining.

The committee will host an additional meeting later in the month.
