Day 2 State Wrestling Quarterfinals

Posted:
DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Class 1-A's best moved one step closer to Saturday night's championship round --

Don Bosco would put 3 wrestlers in to the semis -- including first timer Jordan Schmitz who

dominated his match at 106 for a 16 - 2 tech fall

Jordan Schmitz/Don Bosco Junior

"Feels good. I've been working all year for this to get as far as I can get in the tournament. Hopefully I bring home the gold."

North Butler's Cody Nelson remained perfect at 152 winning by fall in his quarterfinal --

Luke Huber of Hudson guaranteed his first trip to the podium with a major decision at 170 --

Clarksville's Dalton Ciaverelli will make a return trip 1t 182 after a decision over Midland's Ryan Leonard --

Tyler Hoffman of East Buc was winning his match at 195 -- and later advanced due to an injury default --

while A-P's Brandon McCracken put the hurt on West Hancock's Chris Schlueger with a pin at heavyweight --

but most impressive was Cody Marks of Nashua-Plainfield -- forced to miss the tournament due to an injury

last year -- Marks took out top ranked Teddie Harvey with a 9, 4 decision at 145 --

Cody Marks/Nashua-Plainfield Senior

MARKS: "It's just a really good feeling. I knew he was a really good wrestler, and Frost told me just go out there, just don't back down and keep fighting and eventually he'll break at the end, and keep the score close, and that's pretty much what I did."

In class 3A -- Dubuque Senior's lone wolf Chase Gill got the job done moving on at 106 --

The West High Wahawks advanced 2 in Kyler Matthews -- while Marcus Harrington needed a couple of 3rd period takedowns

to get past Roosevelt's Sawyer Kochel at 195

Brett Wheelan/Waterloo West Head Coach

"Marcus wrestled a little tight, a little tentative, but was able to get the job done. Got a few positions I didn't really care for, but wrestled out of them."

Dawson Nemmers of Western Dubuque continued to impress with a major decision to move on at 152 --

while teamwise -- Waverly Shell Rock had a solid day -- Spencer Derifield became a first time

semifinalist with a major decision at 152 -- in all 4 Go-Hawks advanced --

Spencer Derifield/Waverly-Shell Rock Junior

"It felt good, just hit my stuff, stayed solid, didn't try anything funky, and just went for the bonus points and got them."
