Top ranked Alburnett opened day one strong at the state meet.  Defending state champ Hunter Washburn with a major decision at 113 was one of seven Pirates to reach the quarterfinals.

Don Bosco was strong as well, going 4 and 1 in the first round with 106 pounder Jordan Schmitz getting it going with a 4-0 win over Jesup's Colton Dietrick.

A-P's Shane Poppens had to rally at 126, but would put Joel Haberman on his back as he and teammate Brandon McCracken both moved on.

"It was pretty nerve wracking," Aplington-Parkersburg Freshman Shane Poppens said. "I was pretty scared, but I just had to keep my head in the game and keep fighting, keep working."

Sumner-Fredericksburg moved 2 to the quarters including Brady Meyer who got a second period pin at 138 -- South Winn also put 2 in the quarters as 195 pounder Chris Brinks would win by fall. Dalton Ciaverelli's pin at 182 gave Clarksville 2 in the next round.

While Hudson's lone qualifier Luke Huber needed just 34 seconds to dispatch Beau Metcalf at 170 pounds.
"My freshman year I made it down here, I didn't end up placing, I wanted to," Hudson Junior Luke Huber said. "Last year I didn't even make it out of sectionals, so I came down here to prove something this year, and I'm going to finish it."

In Class 3-A, Waverly-Shell Rock and Linn-Mar look to be factors in the team race.

Linn-Mar 145 pounder Joel Northrup's led 7 Lions in to the quarters with a first round pin -- while brothers Bryce and Andrew Steiert picked up a pair of wins pacing 6 Waverly wrestlers in to the next round.

At 106, East High's Kyler Lowe scored early and held on 3, nothing as the Trojan's lone qualifier is in to the quarters.

"It's a tough season," Waterloo East Sophomore Kyler Lowe said. "It's a lot of stress, but I've got to push through it, but all I can say is I do it for Coach Gadson, I do it for my family, and I do it for East High wrestling."

Western Dubuque moved 3 to quarters including Dawson Nemmers who was impressive with a 3rd period pin at 152.

Cedar Falls went 2 for 3 in the first round with a win from Dan Kelly and a dominant tech fall by Nick Hagedorn.

Waterloo West got a couple of big pins from Kyler Matthews at 182 and again from top ranked Marcus Harrington at 195 as the Wahawks sent three wrestlers in to the quarters.

"Actually, I'm pretty surprised, I don't have any nerves at all," Waterloo West Junior Marcus Harrington said. "I know what I have to do, I know what my job is, and I'm going out there to do it."

On Tuesday, Ejim was named the Big 12's basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2nd time in his career.This adds to a laundry list of honors this season including All-American nods from 5 different organizations on top of his Big 12 Player of the Year award.Ejim holds a 3.7 GPA. On the court he averaged 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in helping lead Iowa State to the Sweet 16 and a Big 12 tournament title.More >>
