Valentine's Day spending up from last year

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Flower shops are among the businesses feeling the love this Valentine's Day, as economic projections say things are picking up slightly from last year.

The National Retail Federation is estimating $18.6 billion dollars will be spent on gifts this year and consumers will spend about $5.00 more than last year.

Pierson's Flower Shop in Cedar Rapids has seen business flourish over the past week in anticipation of Valentine's Day.

Thursday all hands were on deck as hundreds of last minute same-day orders were rushed in online and on the phone.

Owner Al Pierson, whose business was victim to 2008's historic flooding, says business continues to grow since.

He expects this Valentine's Day to be one of the busiest yet.

Pierson credits a Thursday celebration as the reason for peak business, as opposed to when it falls on a weekend.

"Maybe they go shopping, maybe they go away, maybe they go out to dinner, but when it's during the week, they'll call and order flowers," said Pierson.

Other businesses going along with a similar tune, like Leap of Faith quartet, which has been booked with Valentine's Day serenades all day.
