State Duals Championships

The first state championships of the weekend were set to be handed out Wednesday night, and 1A's top ranked team had their eye on the prize.

But after Eddyville-Blakesburg's Luke Welch pinned DJ Kohl at heavyweight, Alburnett actually trailed 21, nothing.  But it was domination from there.  Zach Fowler pins Anthony Rea at 106.  Hunter Washburn followed suit with a pin over Megan Black at 113.  The Pirates with the help of a few forfeits won the final 10 grabbing their first state title 60, 21.

Kane Thompson/Alburnett Head Coach
"You know, you want to beat their best line-up, but they're doing what they think's best for their guys, and I think I'm doing what's best for my guys.  I would've loved nothing more than to battle it out with their best guys, but that wasn't the case and so we took advantage of what was put in front of us.  We're always looking at what's in front of us."

Class 2A came down to the wire between West Delaware and Davenport Assumption.

Nick Georgean's pin at 152 capped a run of 7 straight wins for Assumption as they'd lead by 7 with 2 matches left.  At 160, Jake Voss got a 3rd period takedown to slip past Danny Bush to pull the Hawks within 4.  On to 170, West Delaware needed a tech fall or pin from Brent Lammers, but his 8-1 decision wasn't enough.  They'd come up just short 30, 29.

Jeff Voss/West Delaware Head Coach
"I think we focus on the effort that we gave and the kids gave a lot of effort and if they do that the next 3 days then they're going to bring home some state medals, and that's what we've got to focus on right now."

So, West Delaware's chance at 2 team titles has come and gone, but Thursday they'll turn their focus to the big one.
