UNI Women fall to Wichita State 57-47


The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell to the Wichita State Shockers Friday night 57-47.

Jacqui Kalin led the team with 20 points with Jen Keitel adding eight points and nine rebounds. Amber Kirschbaum finished with 11 rebounds with nine of her boards coming on the defensive end.

UNI went into the first media timeout down two points with Wichita State leading 6-4 with 14:43 left in the first half. Keitel scored the Panthers first four points, with UNI's first field goal coming from a turnaround jumper from the redshirt freshman.

Kalin scored her first points of the game, putting UNI within four of Wichita State with 11:47 left in the half, making the score 12-4 after she drove through the lane for a lay-up. After the second media timeout, Kalin hit two big three-pointers from beyond the arc to make the score 14-14.

The Panthers took their first lead of the game with 5:21 on the clock when Kalin hit her third trey of the game to make the score 19-17. Kirschbaum extended the UNI lead to 21-17 off her signature turnaround jumper with less than three minutes left in the half.

UNI went into halftime with a one point lead after Wichita State went on a 6-0 run to end the half. The Panthers 23-22 lead was led by Kalin's 13 points and Kirschbaum's seven rebounds.

Brittni Donaldson gave the Panthers their first field goal since the 17:01 mark in the second half when she knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 35-28 with 12:51 left in the game. Wichita State opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take the lead over the Panthers.

Brooke Brown cut the Shocker lead to three points with 10:36 left in the second half after breaking free for a big three-pointer to make the score 37-34. Wichita State was then able to go on a 9-2 run to take a 10-point lead with 5:55 left in the game.

Hannah Schonhardt was able to cut the Wichita State lead to 10 points again with less than two minutes remaining in the game off a hard cut to the basket, making the score 52-42. The Panthers were unable to make up the deficit, falling 57-47.
