The area of low pressure in South Dakota is forecast to track southeast across Iowa tonight into Thursday morning.
The radar this afternoon shows an area of rain across northern Iowa instead of snow. The reason for the rain instead of the expected snow from the forecast last night is because the warm front is farther north than expected.
The rain this evening will mix with freezing rain and sleet before midnight and continue through early Thursday morning.
Roads will become slick overnight through Thursday morning. Ice accumulation will be less than 0.10". Sleet accumulation will be less than 0.5". Rain amounts could be up to 0.25".
In general, the precipitation amounts will be light with this storm tonight, but it will be enough to make the roads slick. South of highway 20 the above accumulations will be less, so no advisory at the moment for those locations.
The wintry mix tapers off early Thursday afternoon. The clouds will clear Thursday night as high pressure moves south across the Midwest. Sunshine is expected Friday and Saturday morning. Clouds will increase Saturday afternoon as the next area of low pressure moves toward Iowa.
The models today are more consistent than they were yesterday. It helps in the confidence of the models. The low is forecast to track across northwest Iowa Sunday putting eastern Iowa on the warm side. High temperatures Sunday are forecast to reach the upper 30s with all of the precipitation to be in the form of rain.
Once the low moves northeast toward Michigan Monday colder air will wrap in behind it and chance the precipitation over to snow. Early indications are that a lot of the moisture will be out of here before it gets cold enough to produce a lot of snow. So the snow amounts, if it were to accumulate, would be light.
Dry weather is back Tuesday and Wednesday. No real cold air is in the 7-day forecast.
