Camp Little Cloud in Dubuque County and Camp Tahigwa in Allamakee County are two of four camp properties recommended for sale.
On Monday, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois recommended the sale of Camp Conestoga in Scott County, Camp Little Cloud in Dubuque County, Camp L-Kee-Ta in Des Moines County, and Camp Tahigwa in Allamakee County.
The recommendation will be voted on at the next board meeting on March 28, 2013.
A press release from the Girls Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois says this recommendation is followed by five years of research and increased camp marketing efforts.
The research showed none of the four facilities met the needs of the 20,000 girl and 5,000 adult members, and less than 10 percent of members used the camp facilities.
"Each year we subsidize more than 55 percent of our camp facility operating costs, but serve less than 10 percent of our girls," Chairwoman of the Board of Directors Mary Lagerblade said. "This is the equivalent of taking away $76 of programming funds from every Girl Scout who did not attend programming at a camp facility. With the sale of our camps, we would ensure that the council resources are being used wisely and would be reinvested to best serve our members."
According to a press release, the research also showed that girls are more interested in adventure and travel opportunities than the rustic camp experiences.
