Girl Scouts experience mini-medical school

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa Girl Scouts got a chance today to see what it might like to be a doctor.

The University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine put on a mini-medical school Saturday.

130 scouts got a chance to learn about the medical profession through hands-on experiments.

The goal is to show girls how science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM, careers can be fun.

The middle schoolers also learned skills that may be helpful soon.

"I learned how to give CPR and how to work an AED, what foreign bodies are and how to take them out," said Beatrice Kearns, Girl Scout.

Students and faculty at UI also shared their own experiences with the girls. Parents were invited, too, to learn how to encourage STEM activities at home.
