The 3rd ranked Iowa Hawkeyes built a 16-4 lead over #1 Penn State and held on for a 22-16 victory handing the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season.
Iowa two-time NCAA champion Matt McDonough needed an escape in overtime to beat second ranked Nico Megaludis at 125 pounds in a rematch of the 2012 NCAA Finals. And then at 133, the Hawks got a pin from Tony Ramos to push their lead to 9-0. Matt Ballweg picked up a major decision win at 141 to build the Hawkeye advantage to 13-0. And before intermission top ranked Derek St. John got a takedown with 40 seconds left in the match to edge fifth ranked Dylan Alton 4-3. Iowa led 16-4. The Hawkeyes picked up wins from Mike Evans at 174 and Bobby Telford at 285 to secure the victory.
