Cedar Rapids couple gives $50K to Eastern Iowa Honor Flight

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

World War II veteran Robert Wilson has always been interested in taking part in the Honor Flight experience.

"I think it's wonderful.  I think it's a great thing," he said.

Wilson has never applied, however, believing someone less fortunate should have the opportunity to go.

"I thought I would leave it up to somebody that couldn't afford to get there," Wilson said.

The organization Eastern Iowa Honor Flight has a different view.

"Regardless of what your service, what you've did, if you've called, you've earned the right to go," said George Rickey, media chairman for Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.

The non-profit now has financial help in its effort to reach that goal after another World War II veteran- Mike Wilson and his wife Esther of Cedar Rapids donated $50,000 to the organization Friday.

"You're really striking some 90 to 100 people, really striking them individually, and it means something to them," Mike Wilson said.

The money will sponsor an April flight, sending some 100 World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit various historical sights and war memorials.

"America thought it was necessary to build memorials to honor their veterans.  The Honor Flight organization feels it's equally important that the veterans are afforded the opportunity to see the memorials that are dedicated to their service," Rickey said.

For Robert Wilson,  it would be experiencing these sights and sounds with his peers that is extra special and is the reason that he is considering taking part in one of this year's honor flights.

"I'd like to see the other veterans and travel with them to Washington.  I think it would be wonderful."
