Slick conditions have few leaving homes in Cedar Rapids

On Collins Road Sunday afternoon, cars were able to drive by easily without slipping and sliding.

But pull over to the Hy-Vee nearby, or Lindale Mall, and you'd see parking lots full of ice instead of cars. It was the same on the less traveled side streets as well, looking more like ice rinks than roads.

A few decided to venture out despite the ice storm to take advantage of the empty stores.

"We figured it was easy traffic," said Joe Garcia of Marion. "We'd be able to get in and get out faster shopping. "

Joseph Votello of Cedar Rapids likes to take walks and decided to head outside Sunday afternoon.

"There's nothing to do at home but stare at the TV, said Votello. "I get tired of that."

But after being outside and realizing how slippery the sidewalks are he said he would have rather stayed home.

The slick conditions led the Linn County Sheriff's Office to issue a tow ban.

Even those who made successful trips wished they hadn't left home.

Garcia said he wouldn't have left home had he known the conditions, but decided to stay out since he was already out.

But for many, Sunday was a day to just stay home.
