CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Several Iowa middle schoolers have spent the school year learning about engineering and Saturday was the final exam.

35 teams from across the state participated in the Future Cities regional competition in Cedar Rapids. The five finalists were all from Eastern Iowa.

Students had to design a city and create solutions to manage storm water pollution. They had to think about safety, cost, efficiency, and appearance as they designed their futuristic cities.

"When you look at globalization and our being competitive in the world market in the future, this is the kind of skills, these are the skills with science, technology, engineering, and math that we need to be doing with our kids," said Jean Oberbroeckling, Regional Coordinator.

The winning team was from Harding Middle School in Cedar Rapids.  They will represent Iowa at the national finals in Washington, D.C. next month.
