University of Iowa alum to interview for UNI president job


The University of Northern Iowa has announced that a University of Iowa alum will be the second candidate interviewing for the president position.

Avijit Ghosh, currently Senior Adviser to the President at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, will make his two-day visit to campus on January 30 and 31.

Ghosh's visit will include meetings with students, faculty and staff. He will make a presentation and address questions from the audience at a public forum which will be held on January 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Commons, Slife Ballroom.

After more than 20 years at New York University, Ghosh became the Dean of the College of Business at the University of Illinois in 2001.  In 2008, he became the Vice President for Technology and Economic Development.  He held that role until 2011 when he became Senior Advise to the President.

Ghosh earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Calcutta University in India in 1970.  He the completed a Post-Graduate Program in Management at Xavier Institute in India in 1975. 

Ghosh then came to Iowa City where he earned a Master of Arts in Geography from the University of Iowa in 1977 and his Ph.D. in Geography in 1979.

Ghosh served as an instructor in the Department of Geography from 1977 to 1978 and was an assistant professor of marketing from 1979 to 1980.

Ghosh's visit will follow a two-day visit by Dr. William Ruud on January 28 and 29.

Current UNI President Benjamin Allen, who became the university's ninth president in 2006, announced in August 2012 that he will retire by July 1, 2013.
