UPDATE: Prichard wins House District 52 special election

Voters in Floyd, Chickasaw and part of Cerro Gordo County have elected Democrat Todd Prichard as the winner of the House District 52 special election, according to results released by the Iowa Secretary of State office.

The seat was vacated in December when Democrat Brian Quirk announced his resignation when he accepted the job as the general manager of the New Hampton Municipal Light Plant, just weeks after being re-elected.

Prichard received 2,972 votes, or 54.49%.  Republican Dennis Litterer received 2,393 votes, or 43.88% of the vote.  Independent candidate Craig Clark received 84 votes, or 1.54%.

Prichard won all three counties, taking 53.09% of the vote in Cerro Gordo County, 49.74% in Chickasaw County and 59.07% in Floyd County.

Litterer received 45.68% of the vote in Cerro Gordo County, 48.47% in Chickasaw County and 39.41% in Floyd County.

The results are still considered unofficial until they are canvassed.  Thursday is the deadline for absentee ballots to be returned.  Those ballots must have been postmarked on or before January 19.

The county canvass can happen no earlier than 1:00 p.m. on Thursday and the state canvass of votes must be completed by early February.
