Waterloo banquet honors and remembers MLK's legacy

People gathered in Waterloo Sunday night to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the past 34 years, Hawkeye Community College and the African-American Heritage League have hosted the banquet, which took place at the 5 Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.

Community leaders and teachers spoke, remembering the sacrifices Dr. King made for the sake of racial and social equality.

Organizers say the banquet serves as a reminder of Dr. King's ongoing legacy, and of the importance of following his example.

(LaTanya Graves, Banquet Coordinator) "When you remember those that went on before us and the struggles that they went through, that...do not let your future be held back by discrimination, separation, racism, anything. Because you have the willpower, and it's up to you to continue on his legacy by moving forward," said coordinator LaTanya Graves.

Proceeds from the event help to fund scholarships for students, as well as Hawkeye's MLK Center.
