Boy Scouts learn about nuclear energy

Eastern Iowa Boy Scouts were able to earn a unique merit badge Saturday.

Employees from the Science Center and NextEra Duane Arnold Energy Center put on a nuclear merit badge camp. Around 60 scouts learned about fission, atoms and how to protect themselves from radiation contamination.

Workers from Iowa's only nuclear power plant also taught the boys about careers in nuclear energy.

"I learned about radiation and how some of it's dangerous and some of it's not," said Jacob Hath, Boy Scout.

The camp was held at Coe College. That's because due to federal regulations, general visitors aren't allowed at the Duane Arnold Plant in Palo.
