Waterloo man attributes weight loss to Blue Zones involvement

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

LeRoy Buehler is taking control of his life. Since June of last year, he's lost more than 63 pounds. Going from 400 to about 336 pounds.

Most of that weight loss was through better eating habits.

But he just added walking to his weight loss plan by signing up for the Moai Walking Club, which is part of the Blue Zones Project, aimed at making Iowa one of the healthiest states by 2016.

"I think it's a marvelous opportunity for anyone in Waterloo/Cedar Falls to hop on this bandwagon and don't let this opportunity go by. If I can do it at 400 pounds, you can certainly do it at 200 or 250," said LeRoy Buehler.

At 67 years old, Buehler said his two grandchildren, ages 17 and 7, really inspired him to change his life.

"They've done some awesome things already in their lives, and I want to watch them do more awesome things. The way to do that is to be here, and the way I was going I probably wasn't going to be here too long," said Buehler.

In terms of food, Buehler said he's more focused on portion control. The grandfather believes adding the Moai Walking Club is really going to boost his weight loss.

Moai, means "meeting for a common purpose" in Japanese, and the idea is for a group of people to meet for at least 10 weeks to walk together and socialize.

"It's harder not to go walking if there's people expecting you to be there. Rather than just saying I'm not going to walk today, now you're disappointing other people," he said.

Buehler said he and his wife are also clearing space in their basement to finally use their exercise equipment. He hopes others jump on the Blue Zones bandwagon, and join him in an effort to get healthier to live a longer, happier life.

"Outside of family, I think Blue Zones is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I really do," said LeRoy Buehler.
