Health Plus: New cath lab to help more eastern IA hearts

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Thousands of heart procedures are being done every year in eastern Iowa.

That's why one Waterloo hospital is expanding its cardiac services to help meet the need.

Here's Health Plus with one patient's story.

Carolana Magsamen knew something wasn't right.

"Pretty soon it was becoming hard to breathe and what have you going up and down stairs and then the acid reflux was there," she said.

Turns out the 70-year-old Waterloo woman needed not just one but two heart procedures.

Her cardiac catheterization happened at Covenant Medical Center.

"She presented with spider-like sensations in her chest and had an abnormal stress test afterward. We cathed her and she was found to have all of her coronary arteries blocked, plugged up really bad," said Dr. Ahsan Maqsood, a Covenant cardiologist.

This year the hospital is opening a second cath lab to meet the needs of local patients.

"In this lab we'll not only be able to do cardiovascular procedures but interventional radiology and vascular surgery we will be able to perform peripheral interventions as well," Dr. Maqsood said.

For Carol, heeding her suspicion something wasn't right probably saved her life.

"Because of what happened and the month or two months that this all took place we have since been to Italy and I have been able to climb and walk for six and eight hours at a time so, as I said, I am blessed," she said.

Covenant's new cath lab opened this month.
