Iowa utilities honored for Hurricane Sandy response

Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy are being honored for their help in restoring electric and natural gas service to thousands of people on the East Coast impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

The Edison Electric Institute awarded the two companies their 2012 Emergency Assistance Award.  More than 60 utility companies across the country will be recognized for their efforts in responding to weather disasters in 2012.

"These awards recognize the extreme efforts made by Iowa's utility crews. It shows that our crews in Iowa are second to none. Iowans can take comfort knowing that when the weather is at its worst, the workers who help bring electricity and natural gas to our homes are at their best," said Mark Douglas, Iowa Utility Association president, in a written statement.

Alliant Energy sent 215 employees, including 114 from Iowa, and 138 contract line workers and tree crew members.  MidAmerican Energy sent 29 employees from Iowa.  They also released more than 250 contract line workers and tree crew members so they could assist on the East Coast.

"The damage caused by Superstorm Sandy was unprecedented and so was the response from our staff and our state. We're proud to have helped out in one of the largest restoration efforts our industry has ever seen," said Pat Kampling, chairman, president and CEO of Alliant Energy in a written statement.  "We know we made many allies if we ever need help back home, especially with Central Hudson Gas and Electric, who nominated us for this award."

"All of our 29 employees voluntarily participated in the relief effort," said Bill Fehrman, president and CEO of MidAmerican Energy in a written statement.  "Their hard work and commitment to restore power and help these communities return to normal is greatly appreciated."

Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will host a ceremony to recognize Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy employees who responded to Hurricane Sandy on Monday at Noon at the Iowa Capitol.
