Council moves toward third Moen high-rise in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
First, it was the Plaza Towers.
Then The Park at 201.
Now coming soon, The Chauncey.
"I'm not for stagnation. I supported this project last night. I supported it from the very beginning," said Iowa City council member Connie Champion.
Marc Moen's development was selected yet again as the best fit for Iowa City Tuesday night.
The council selected Moen's Chauncey project as the preferred development for the blighted corner of College and Gilbert streets, a site the city had been hoping to develop for about a year.
"It has a lot of mixed uses, and we really liked that," Champion said.
The proposed 20-story, $53-million building features a wide range of uses, everything from a movie theater and bowling alley to condos, office space, and a hotel.
It's another unique addition to downtown which continues to look to attract a broader demographic ever since bars became 21 only.
"At two in the morning after those bars let out, there was a lot of violence down here and a lot of vandalism, and that has almost totally stopped," Champion said.
Some question the direction the city is headed.
"I guess I'm concerned to have yet another high-rise building come into the downtown," said resident Mark Isham.
Isham has lived in Iowa City for more than 40 years. He says high-rise buildings like The Chauncey are out of historical character with the area and detract from what many feel makes Iowa City special.
"We're getting a transformation of our landscape here with all of the shorter buildings being torn down and being replaced by high-rises."
