SAC COUNTY (KWWL) -
Iowa prison officials say there were warning signs ahead of a kidnapping and murder in western Iowa last week.
Sac County authorities arrested 21-year-old Kirk Levin after a woman called police to say he'd kidnapped her.
While investigating the kidnapping, authorities also found the body of Levin's mother, stabbed to death.
Levin had previously been in jail, where officials say they confiscated a notebook with explicit writings and drawings depicting sexual assault and rape.
Levin was released from prison January 1st. Authorities believe he killed his mother two days later.
Corrections officials say they told the Sac County sheriff about the notebook before Levin was released.
