Small fire closes Tipton High School for the day

Tipton High School closed for the day on Tuesday morning after a small fire in the auditorium which was being renovated.

Tipton Community School District Superintendent Richard Grimoskas says smoke alarms began going off at about 10 p.m. Monday.  He says fire crews found smoldering insulation in the ceiling above the stage in the auditorium, which is being remodeled.  Grimoskas says crews left the school at about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Then, shortly after at 7 a.m. Tuesday, construction workers arrived for the day and found a small fire in another part of the ceiling.  Fire crews were called to the school again and remained on scene until around 11:30 a.m.  Grimoskas says crews are confident that all areas of smoldering insulation have been put out.

Grimoskas decided at 9 a.m. Tuesday that they would release high school students and staff for the day due to the smell caused by the small fires.

Classes will resume as normal at the high school on Wednesday.
