Historic tree comes down in Cedar Rapids

A tree dating back to the Civil War is being taken down in Cedar Rapids.

It's located on the corner of the parking lot at the Indian Creek Nature Center.  It is a White Oak, which has a life span of up to 400 years.  Few ever get that old.

The nature center says the tree's health has been declining for several years, and is near power lines and hangs over a parking lot.

The center wanted to take it down before rotting caused a power outage or hurt someone.

A new tree will be planted in the White Oak's place.
