UPDATE: A helicopter spends the night in Marshalltown after mechanical problem

A Mercy One medical helicopter will be spending Thursday night in Marshalltown after a mechanical problem.

Des Moines Mercy Medical Center's spokesperson Gregg Lagen says the helicopter landed on Main Street in Marshalltown at 2 p.m. Thursday. The landing was planned on Main Street because the closest Heli-pad was occupied.

The crew was going to fly a patient to Des Moines, but as the helicopter was getting ready to take off, a caution light came on. The crew followed protocol and called a mechanic. Meanwhile, the patient was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Lagen says the helicopter would be moved off the main road and into a parking lot for the night. The mechanical problem is still unknown at this time.

This comes a day after a medical helicopter crashed in northern Iowa, killing the pilot, a nurse and a paramedic.
