Someone You Should Know: Paul and Marrillee Tiedt - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

The Tiedts perform music for seniors in eastern Iowa

Paul and Marrillee Tiedt of Readlyn married more than 60 years ago. After they retired from farming 12 years ago, the Tiedts began performing music at nursing homes, retirement facilities and senior centers in eastern Iowa.

"It's mostly bluegrass and gospel songs," said Paul Tiedt.

Neither has any formal training in music.

"I got my first guitar when I was 18 years old. Then after I got back from the military I got a better guitar, and we would play for my parents' birthdays and such as that," said Paul Tiedt.

The couple performs at Arlington Place in Oelwein every other month. The performance usually lasts about 45 minutes.

Paul is 88 years old and Marrillee is 80 years old.

"I think my favorite part is I can do something with my husband," said Marrillee Tiedt.

They keep performing for several reasons. One is the care facility residents.

"If you watch their feet or hand is going with us at all times. I think they really enjoy it," said Paul Tiedt.

Another reason is simply for a love of music.

"Just because we enjoy doing it, and I think it's good for us," he said.

The couple plans to keep performing and is open to booking even more locations to share their music.
