DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
A Dubuque man charged with the first-degree murder of a toddler entered a written plea of not guilty early Wednesday morning.
Nicholas Reed, 34, was scheduled for an arraignment hearing Wednesday but did not appear in court.
Reed is accused of killing his girlfriend's two-year-old son, Bentley Randall.
The boy's mother left Randall in the care of Reed while she was at work on Black Friday.
When she returned, she found Randall with serious burns and head trauma. He died two days later.
According to Dubuque County assistant prosecuting attorney Chris Corken, a judge set Reed's final pre-trial conference for Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. and his trial for Monday, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m. These dates are subject to change.
