Most wonderful time of year for box office

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The presents are unwrapped and you've eaten the big meal, so what happens next? For many, Christmas Day means a trip to the movies.

For Andi Savago and her family, going to the movies on Christmas Day is a tradition.

"We always try to go to a movie on Christmas Day because it is special," said Savago.  "We open our presents in the morning and then have to have something to do to get us out of the house."

Seven-year-old Cooper is excited. It's her first year getting to join the grown-ups.

"I haven't gone to the movies in a while," said Cooper.

Gathering up the family and heading to the theater is a tradition for many. Dec. 25 and 26 are the two busiest days of the year at Cedar Rapids' Galaxy 16.

"We prepare for this day," said Anna Wilcox, General Manager. "We know this day is coming."

Long lines, sold out show times -- the theater is packed and Hollywood knows. That's why so many movies release on Christmas Day.

This year's new releases include Django Unchained, Les Miserables and Parental Guidance.

"It's a fight for what movies going to be," said Wilcox. "They're knocking them out and pushing them back to January and moving this one up to December because they know they're going to make so much money today."

Meaning, it's especially the most wonderful time of the year for the box office.

Experts say another reason so many movies release this time of year is because they have to start showing before the year ends to qualify for a 2013 Oscar nomination.
