Dog is shot and killed in yard on Christmas Eve

A Quad Cities woman was visiting friends in the small town of Marne on Christmas Eve when she says a man came out of his house and shot her dog for no reason.

Wrigley was a playful pup who just loved romping around in the snow. Monday that playfulness cost the one-year old chocolate lab her life.

"My dog was playing with my friend's dog," Stacey Ernat said. "They're both young puppies and they were just tumbling around in the snow… and the guy who was two houses up came out his back door and shot my chocolate lab. I ran up there and I found her under a boat trailer that was lifted off the ground.  She was curled up in a ball...really scared and confused why she was hurt so bad… so I picked her up and I held her an I told her it was gonna be OK."

But it wasn't.  Wrigley died a few hours later at the vet's office.

Police say Collins Cutler admitted to shooting Wrigley with a shotgun and didn't offer any apologies.  He tells deputies he just didn't want the dog in his yard.

Cutler was sited for illegally discharging a firearm in town.

"I just wish he would have thought about what he would have did because I wouldn't be here right now. I wouldn't be heartbroken without my best friend," Ernat said.

Discharging a firearm in the city limits is a simple misdemeanor, so police say if cutler is convicted, he'll likely be fined but *not* face jail time.  He is expected to be in court next month.
