A hero's welcome home

When one soldier's family learned he'd be back for Christmas, they decided to give him a hero's welcome home by bringing about 25 family members to the Eastern Iowa Airport Sunday afternoon.

Army specialist Jeff Taylor just returned to Iowa after serving his country for nine months in Afghanistan. He's thankful to be back for the holidays.

"We just don't get to see him a lot," said Isaac Taylor, Taylor's nephew.

"He did his tour," said Tom Taylor, Taylor's father. "We're glad to get to have him back home, and we're all very proud of him."

The welcome crew was an unexpected surprise for the soldier.

"It's overwhelming," said Taylor.  "I got very little sleep last night and to see everybody is a great thrill."

Taylor is stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington. He grew up in Rowley and has been in the Army for two years.

"When we first got our orders, we weren't going to be home until a little bit later than this," Taylor said. "So I'm happy to be able to be home with my family."
