Thousands of Iowans out of power Thursday night

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Tens of thousands of Iowans were without power Thursday night and Friday morning.

Around 10 p.m., Alliant Energy was reporting more than 91,000 customers out of power in Linn County, more than 4,000 in Black Hawk County, and more than 6,000 in Benton County.

Earlier Thursday, MidAmerican Spokesperson Tina Potthoff said the worst hit area for MidAmerican was in Des Moines.

"We've seen some down lines. We've seen broken tree branches on lines. We've seen broken equipment on power lines across the entire service territory," Potthoff said. "So its really important for people to remember to be safe… watch where they're going and if they do see a downed power line. Give us a call."

At 10 p.m. MidAmerican had more than 27,000 customers in Des Moines out of power.

Crews across the state are working through the night to get power back on, that includes Alliant. Alliant Spokesperson Ryan Stensland told KWWL on Thursday they would be responding to calls all night unless a call would put their crew in danger.

"We're not going to send out crews out into a situation where their safety maybe jeopardized," Stensland said. "But at this time, we're fairly confident that those crews will be able to work around the clock to make the repairs necessary to get everyone back on."
