Cedar Rapids prepares for blizzard

Crews over at public works have spent the day preparing for the big storm.

Trucks are ready.  All the plows are on.

There's ten people working both second and third shifts in Cedar Rapids and plenty more on call for whenever the storm is at its worst.

The preparation actually began months ago when the department made it's first salt order in April.

They want to make sure the 620 miles of roadways they're responsible for are as safe as possible for drivers.

"We've mounted all of our plows, all of our spreaders," said Craig Hanson, Public Works Maintenance Manager.  "We've checked all of our equipment and all of it is functioning. We did do some brining earlier today based on potential temperature conditions and what may or may not happen."

Cedar Rapids Public Works only maintains city streets.  Officials ask you to slow down when driving near plows for their safety and your own.

"When you're near a plow give them room for the wind around them,' said Hanson.  "They will cause minor whiteouts near a snowplow and you may not seem them."

The Iowa Department of Transportation handles highways and I380, which has had signs warning drivers of tonight's conditions for hours.

Garbage and recycling collection for tomorrow have already been canceled in Cedar Rapids. Thursday collections will happen Friday and Friday's get moved to Saturday.
