WATERLOO (KWWL) -
The Waterloo Salvation Army has now received its ninth gold coin of the Christmas season. Until now, the Waterloo chapter has only ever collected one or two gold coins a year.
Sue Hennings with the Waterloo Salvation Army believes the record for gold coins was in Florida when a chapter there also received nine gold coins in one kettle campaign. Hennings is hoping this year's generous donor in Waterloo is on a mission to donate Lady Liberty gold coins each of the "12 days of Christmas".
All of the gold coins are being sold through an auction house. Early bids for the first two gold coins surpassed $3500. That's significant in helping the Waterloo Salvation Army reach its fundraising goal this year of $709,000. The red kettle campaign accounts for about 75 percent of the organization's total budget for the year.
