PREVIOUS: Schlitter trial in jury's hands

The defense and prosecution have submitted their final arguments to the jury in the Zyriah Schlitter murder trial.

Schlitter and his ex-girlfriend Amy Parmer are charged with first degree murder and child endangerment in the 2010 death of Schlitter's 18 month old daughter Kamryn.  Kamryn died from severe head trauma.

Prosecutors say Schlitter and Parmer facilitated a culture of abuse in the three weeks Kamryn was in their care.

Medical evidence finds Kamryn was abused more than once in that timeframe and that those incidents contributed to Kamryn's death.

Prosecutors argue Schlitter changed his story several times.

"He was Kamryn's dad.  Kamryn was supposed to feel safe in her dad's arms.  Dad's are supposed to protect little girls," said Nick Maybanks, the prosecuting attorney in this case.

The defense argues that Schlitter wasn't aware that the bruises on Kamryn were a concern until days before she was taken to the emergency room.

The defense says Schlitter was unaware abuse was taking place.

Evidence shows that Parmer was alone with Kamryn for a few hours every Sunday- including right before Kamryn went to the hospital.

"The medical people, yes it was trauma.  But they can't tell you when the trauma occurred.  They don't tell you what Amy Parmer is like," said defense attorney Tom Gaul.
