IDOT gears up for first winter storm of the season

The Iowa Department of Transportation says sheds are full of salt and they are ready to go for the winter storm hitting Eastern Iowa Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bremer County garage is part of district two, which is 19 counties.

Just in that garage there are 13 trucks for the county.

Officials say they always keep the sheds full of salt, buying in the spring to prepare for winter.

Since last year's winter was mild, they didn't have to take in as many shipments.

The DOT asks if you are out on the roads to make sure you give their trucks a lot of room. When you see the flashing lights of their orange trucks slow down and pass with caution.

"One of the big things we find is when drivers pass snow plows is they end up dealing with a change in conditions. When you are behind a snow plow you are on a plowed road. You get in front of that snow plow. That road hasn't been plowed yet so there is a lot of different conditions you may run into," said Pete Hjelmstad, Field Services Coordinator.

If you do pass the trucks make sure you don't cut in too soon. The DOT says their blade sticks out further than you may think.
