CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -
Just one week before Christmas stores are usually crowded with shoppers, but the parking lot at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids was practically empty Tuesday.
Neighbors say that's been the problem for years.
"It just kept falling back---less stores and less stores," said Jim Wehr.
Cedar Rapids realtor Scott Byers and the Frew Development Group are looking to change that with a $90 million redevelopment. They say they'll work with the tenants there and plan to keep the anchor stores, but in the future they'll knock down some parts to create a park, hotel, and housing.
"This is a place where we envision people can eat, sleep, play, shop, and work," said John Frew.
Tuesday night the Cedar Rapids City Council put its support behind the idea and neighbors are excited.
"It probably would kind of revive this area anyway and make it more vibrant," said Wehr.
Frew hopes to start construction on site by this time next year. He says it's a long process and the mall will stay open for "a while."
