Black Hawks defenseman Newell recovering after crash

Black Hawks defenseman Victor Newell is awake and recovering following a scary crash in Waterloo late Monday night.

Newell, 19,  was unconscious when he was taken to Allen Hospital after crashing in to a tree in the 600 block of Cedar Bend Road Street.  He was later transferred to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.  He has since regain consciousness and is recovering from facial injuries received in the crash.

Newell's mother told in his hometown of Burnaby, British Columbia, that her son suffered a fractured eye socket, but no damage to the eye itself in the crash.  Jan Newell also said that a CAT scan showed no internal injuries.

Newell is in his first season with Waterloo.  He was acquired in a trade with Omaha in October.  The Burnaby, British Columbia native is committed to Harvard University.
