WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Black Hawks defenseman Victor Newell was injured in a car accident late Monday night in Waterloo.  Police say his vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the road and hit a tree in the 600 block of Cedar Bend Street.

Newell, 19, was unconscious when he was brought to Allen Hospital.  He was later transported to the University of Iowa Hospital where his condition is currently unavailable.

The Black Hawks released the following statement on Tuesday, "The thoughts of our players, coaches, and fans are with Victor.  We pray for his complete recovery and offer our support to both Victor and his family as they cope with this traumatic event."

Newell is in his first season with Waterloo.  He was acquired in a trade with Omaha in October.  The Burnaby, British Columbia native is committed to Harvard University.
