PREVIOUS: Zyriah Schlitter, accused of killing own child, takes the stand

The man accused of killing his own daughter two years ago took the stand Monday in his own defense.

Zyriah Schlitter is charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment following the death of his 18-month-old daughter Kamryn Schlitter.

Throughout his testimony Monday, Zyriah Schlitter said he didn't see any bruises on his daughter, Kamryn, in the days leading up to her death -- something the state is trying to disprove.

He was emotional during his testimony today, often having to pause to wipe his face with a tissue.

The defense played a video that Schlitter supposedly recorded just one day before Kamryn's injuries.

The video shows Kamryn playing and looking happy. The next day she was hospitalized with injuries that later proved fatal.

"They explained to me that only 30 percent of her brain was active right at that moment," said Schlitter.

The child was in the hospital for a week before family decided to take her off life support.

"We both discussed it, and we decided it would be best to let her go," said Schlitter.

During cross examination, the state showed Schlitter a picture of Kamryn from shortly before her death.

"I hardly see any bruise on her forehead, there, and I don't remember her eye looking that bad," said Schlitter.

Schlitter says Kamryn was in the care of his then-girlfriend, Amy Parmer, when the child received the injuries that led to her death.

Schlitter also testified her never saw Parmer hurt his child or her own, saying she was good with the kids.

Parmer also faces charges of first-degree murder and child endangerment. Her trial is set to begin in January.
