Bonin's life journey continues at UNI

David Bonin came a long way from his home in Broussard, La.

But wherever David finds himself geographically, wrestling has been the one constant to keep him on a straight path.

"Without wrestling, I don't know the decisions I would have made differently," Bonin said. "I really don't want to know, because it's been good to me. When things get bad in life I can say to myself that I've been through something harder, and this is nothing."

Now, Bonin (pronounced boh-nay) is attending the University of Northern Iowa. He said it was an easy decision to become a Panther.

"Back home, there's no wrestling, college-wise, anywhere near me, pretty much," Bonin said. "I took a tour around here on a recruiting trip and loved the area; it wasn't a big city, it wasn't a little town, it was kind of right in the middle and it kind of fit me, and it's been home ever since."

UNI wrestling coach Doug Schwab said Bonin fits UNI, too.

"I definitely think that he just kind of fits now," Schwab said. "He's part of UNI, he's part of Cedar Falls, part of the Cedar Valley, and he fits -- even though sometimes you can't understand some of what he says."

Bonin has used his life experiences to set an example for developing UNI wrestlers.

"Hopefully he's around here for years to come to rub off on our young guys, and he's doing a good job of that," Schwab said.

Bonin said his own life experience will help with that.

"I've been there, and believe me, I've done every dumb thing you could probably do," he said. "I've learned the hard way, I guess you could say."
