Community decorates Christmas trees in memory of Evansdale girls

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

The Marvets family in Evansdale put up two Christmas trees in their front yard earlier in the week. One for Lyric Cook and one for Elizabeth Collins.

"We wanted to have the trees decorated for them to see when they got home," Tammy Marvets said.

Marvets said although the girls' bodies were found Wednesday afternoon, they still want to decorate the trees in memory of the two cousins.

During a vigil Thursday night, folks prayed. They also brought special ornaments to decorate the trees in memory of the Evansdale girls.

Zuhra Hodzic of Evansdale decorated the trees with her sisters.

"We were hoping the girls were going to be home for Christmas," she said. "We were hoping the same thing for Thanksgiving."

Now Hodzic said she hopes for peace.

"I hope they're flying high and looking down at all of us," she said.

Marvets said she doesn't care how many trees she has to buy to help the community remember the two cousins.

"I hope it helps the community start the healing process," she said. "It's just amazing to see the outpouring of support for the girls and their families."

After Christmas, Marvets said all the ornaments will be donated to Elizabeth and Lyric's families.

"We love the girls," Marvets said. "They're our girls, too. We're still praying for them."
