Evansdale family's Christmas tree honors Lyric, Elizabeth

Every Christmas, the Marvets deck their lawn with festive decorations. This year, there's a new addition to the display -- and one that holds a great deal of meaning for those still searching for two missing cousins.

Tammy Marvets and her husband live across the street from the Evansdale Community Response Center -- ground zero during the initial search for Lyric Cook, 11, and Elizabeth Collins, 9, who disappeared more than four months ago.

"My husband came up with the idea one day," Tammy Marvets explained. "He went out and got a tree and thought it would be nice if the community could share their ornaments with the girls."

The Marvets are asking everyone to add an ornament to the tree. Then, once the holidays are over, they say they'll give the decorations to the Cook and Collins families as a way to remind them how many people are thinking of them.

"I feel like the girls are our girls too," Marvets said. "They're just part of our family too now. We went on searches and did what we could for our part."

Marvets didn't know either family well. But her children are the same age as Elizabeth and Lyric, and news of their disappearance hit close to home.

"It was devastating. And it still is devastating. We just hope and pray that they come home soon," said Marvets.

She said the entire Cedar Valley community feels the same way -- which may mean they have to find room for hundreds of ornaments.

"Bring it on! It's for the girls," she said.

Of course, the hope is for the girls to be returned home and be able to see the tree themselves.

"That would be the best Christmas present ever if they came home," said Marvets.

There is a reward for any information leading to Elizabeth and Lyric's return. If you know anything, call the Evansdale Police Department at (319) 232-6682 or the Cedar Valley Crimestoppers at 1-855-300-TIPS. (855-300-8477)
