CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A 27-year old Cedar Rapids woman has been identified as the victim shot and killed by a Cedar Rapids police officer early Tuesday morning, following a chase.

Cedar Rapids Police identify the victim as Desirae Daniel.

The officer-involved fatal shooting occurred at approximately 2:30 AM. A Cedar Rapids Police spokesperson says officers attempted to make a traffic stop early Tuesday morning when the driver sped away from police.

Following a chase, the suspect vehicle eventually stopped in the 200 block of 27th Street NW, and officers approached the vehicle.

"We train for that," said Police Sergeant Cristy Hamblin.  "We prepare for that during the academy. We have ongoing training, any new tips that we can come up with, to keep the citizens safe as well as our officers safe."

Cedar Rapids Police say the female driver, Desirae Daniel, showed a handgun and that's when officers fired.  Multiple witnesses heard the gunshots.

"I was in the house and I heard sirens and then gunshots.  It sounded like four or five.  I mean it happened so quick you don't think about it at the time," said Dean Wheeler, who lives near the incident.

Daniel was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where she later died. An autopsy will be conducted in Ankeny by the State Medical Examiner's office.

A family member of Daniel says she was a good person and was always looking out for others.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation. That's standard procedure in any shooting involving a police officer.

The officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. The names of the officers involved have not been made public.
