Local health organizations took part in a HIV and AIDS awareness event held at Crossroads Mall in Waterloo on Saturday. The goal of the event was to educate people on living with the disease, health risks, and the community support options available to those in Eastern Iowa. The event included a scavenger hunt, children craft's table, and information on several HIV/AIDS resources within the community.
It's estimated that every year 50,000 people become infected with HIV and according to the HIV Community Coalition, there is about 1400 confirmed cases of HIV in Iowa.
